Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red warning for Khurda district, including the state capital Bhubaneswar, till 5.15 pm on Monday
The district is likely to experience severe thunderstorm accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph, lightning, moderate to intense spell of rain during this period.
The weather agency has warned of damage to thatched huts, standing crops, banana, papaya trees and power and communication lines due to breaking of branches and waterlogging in low-lying areas. People are advised to take shelter in concrete structures instead of trees to protect themselves from lightning strikes and move away from electric poles and wires.
The warning has come amid formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. Another low-pressure area is likely over east-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around September 25. Both the weather systems are likely to trigger heavy rain in Odisha till September 27, according to the MeT office.
Squally weather with wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph may also prevail along and off the Odisha coast and north Bay of Bengal from September 21-25.
