New Delhi: Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and singer Zubeen Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma have been arrested in Delhi in connection with the investigation into the singer’s death. Assam Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) took both into custody and brought them to Guwahati, where a court remanded them to 14 days’ police custody.
Police officials said Mahanta was detained at Indira Gandhi International Airport after arriving from Singapore, while Sharma was picked up from a residential flat in Gurugram. Both were produced before the Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate’s residence court due to the Durga Puja holidays, and were sent to SIT custody for further interrogation.
The arrests come amid the ongoing probe into Zubeen Garg’s death in Singapore on September 19, 2025, which was reported as a case of drowning. A 10-member SIT led by Special DGP M. P. Gupta is handling the investigation. The team had earlier conducted searches at the homes of Mahanta and Sharma, seizing documents and electronic devices.
The Assam government had earlier announced that both men must present themselves for questioning by October 6, and lookout notices were issued. Following their arrests, officials said interrogation will focus on events leading up to Garg’s death and their role in organising the Northeast Festival in Singapore.
The SIT has maintained that the investigation is active and more evidence is being examined, while family members and supporters of Garg have demanded a transparent probe.
