Mayurbhanj: Four members of a family were injured on Sunday after a massive explosion blew away the asbestos roof and walls of an illegal firecracker manufacturing unit in Bachhuripada village under Baisinga police limits in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district.
According to sources, the incident took place at around 11 am while fireworks and explosives were being illegally prepared inside the house. The firecrackers continued to burst till police and Fire Service personnel arrived at the spot.
Anil Das sustained critical injuries in the blast and he along with his younger brother Sunil Das, wife Krishna Das and mother Shantilata were rushed to Baisinga primary health centre for treatment. Anil was later shifted to Balasore district headquarters hospital and again to Bhubaneswar as his condition deteriorated.
Sources further stated that a few families in the village continued to manufacture firecrackers illegally despite raids and seizures by police.
This comes close on the heels of a fatal explosion at an illegal firecracker storage facility in Boudh district, which claimed one life and severely injured five others, on September 21.
