New Delhi: At least 15 flights were diverted at Delhi’s India Gandhi International airport on Tuesday evening as heavy rains lashed the national Capital and adjoining areas.
Eight flights were diverted to Jaipur, five to Lucknow and two to Chandigarh, according to NDTV.
The Capital woke up to a wet Tuesday, with the minimum temperature recorded at 21 degrees Celsius, which was 1.3 degrees below normal.
There were intermittent showers in the morning, which continued past noon. There was a brief lull in the afternoon, but then the dark clouds returned, followed by a spell of heavy rain which led to huge traffic jams and waterlogging in several areas.
Delhi Airport authorities warned the public at 4.30 pm that flight operations were likely to be affected due to inclement weather.
“Due to adverse weather conditions in Delhi, flight operations at Delhi Airport may be impacted. Our on-ground teams are diligently working with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience,” Delhi airport said.
Passengers were advised to check with their respective airlines for updated flight information and to consider using the Delhi Metro to reach the airport in order to avoid possible delays on the roads.
IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet also issue advisories, alerting flyers about potential delays due to the weather conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) earlier predicted rain for the day and issued yellow and orange alerts, cautioning residents about moderate rainfall with light thunderstorms and lightning in the region.
