Bhubaneswar: Popular Odia music composer Abhijit Majumdar, who had been undergoing treatment at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar in a comatose state for the past two months, was on Monday shifted from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to E6 isolation room in the Medicine Ward.
Giving details of his condition, ECMO Specialist of the hospital Dr Srikant Behera informed that his vitals are stable and he is out of ventilator. However, his repeat MRI brain on October 23 showed no significant radiological improvement.
The 54-year-old composer was admitted to AIIMS emergency on September 4 in a comatose condition.He was later shifted to the medical ICU under the supervision of ICU and ECMO specialist at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar, Srikant Behera.
He was diagnosed with Osmotic Demyelination Syndrome (a progressive neurological condition affecting the brain), bilateral pneumonia, blood stream infection, chronic liver disease, dyselectrolytemia (an imbalance of certain ionized salts) and nutritional deficiency (Vitamin D, Folic acid).
After intensive treatment, his pneumonia and blood stream infection were brought under control, and his nutritional and electrolyte levels were corrected. A percutaneous tracheostomy was performed on September 9 in view of prolonged mechanical ventilation. He was gradually weaned off the ventilator and was moved to the Medicine Ward on September 25.
However, Majumdar was shifted to the ICU again on October 11 as his condition deteriorated again, requiring mechanical ventilation support and vasopressors. Subsequently, his condition improved, allowing doctors to discontinue life-support systems. “However, there has been no improvement in his neurological status., and he is persistently in comatose condition with GCS-E3VtM 1,” the hospital bulletin said.
Majumdar, who composed music for numerous blockbuster Odia films, enjoys a massive fan following across the state. His popular works include Love Story, Sister Sridevi, Golmaal Love, Sundargarh Ra Salman Khan, and Sriman Surdas.
