New Delhi: At least eight people have died and several others were injured after a car exploded near the Red Fort metro station in Delhi on Monday evening. A few vehicles at the spot caught fire and were completely gutted.
Fire brigade and police personnel carried out rescue operations and the area has been cordoned off. The cause of the explosion is still not known. Forensics and bomb detection and disposal squads have also reached the spot.
A team from the National Security Guard (NSG) has also reached the spot.
Authorities have also not confirmed the exact number of casualties. At least a dozen injured have been rushed to the LNJP Hospital. The death toll may rise as the mangled remains of the vehicles are thoroughly searched, an official said.
The blast has given rise to speculation as a large quantity of explosive material was seized from Faridabad in the National Capital Region (NCR) in the morning. At least seven people, including three doctors have bee arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir Police in this connection.
The Delhi Police have not revealed whether the blast in the evening had anything to do with that operation.
(This is a developing story)
