Mumbai: The Delhi High Court on Monday disposed of the petition filed by late Major Mohit Sharma’s parents, seeking a stay on Ranveer Singh’s ‘Dhurandhar’, and instructed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to consult the Indian Army if needed.

Late Major Sharma’s parents, 77-year-old Sushila Sharma and 75-year-old Rajendra Prasad Sharma, represented by advocates Roopenshu Pratap Singh and Manish Sharmaa of Samaanta Law Firm, alleged that a film has been made based on their son’s story, without the consent of his family or approval from the Indian Army.

The petition, filed in Delhi High Court on November 28, cites violation of the family’s privacy rights under Article 21 of the Constitution and raised concerns about national security, stating that depicting Special Forces tactics could risk revealing sensitive details, Bar and Bench reported.

Calling the plea “misconceived,” senior Advocate Saurabh Kirpal, representing the producers of the film, denied any relation between the film and Major’s life.

CGSC Ashish Dixit, representing CBFC, confirmed that the film has been assessed as fictional.

While the court did not issue a stay order on the release of ‘Dhurandhar’, it directed the CBFC to carefully consider the objections raised by the Major’s parents and consult the Indian Army before giving a clearance to the film.

As of now, the fate of the film rests solely with the CBFC.

For the unversed, Major Mohit Sharma is an Ashoka Chakra (posthumous) and Sena Medal awardee.

He served in the Indian Army’s 1 Para (Special Forces) and was killed in action in Jammu & Kashmir’s Kupwara, on March 21, 2009.

After the trailer of ‘Dhurandhar’ was unveiled, social media users started drawing comparisons between Ranveer’s character in the film to the late Major’s real-life military operations.

Following online discussions, the Major’s parents moved the High Court seeking a stay on the film.

Their petition included names of the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI), Jio Studios, producer Jyoti Deshpande, and Aditya Dhar as respondents.

The film hit another roadblock when widow of Karachi cop, Chaudhary Aslam, threatened legal action against the filmmakers if her husband is falsely and negatively portrayed in the film.

Directed by Aditya Dhar, ‘Dhurandhar’ also stars, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna and Sara Arjun in key roles, and will hit theatres on December 5.
