Cuttack: The historic Barahati Stadium in Odisha’s Cuttack city appears set for a major expansion with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi indicating plans to substantially increase its seating capacity.
Asserting that the state government is committed to enhancing the stadium’s facilities to host more international matches, the Chief Minister hinted at the possibility of upgrading the iconic stadium.
Majhi made the remarks after India’s emphatic win over South Africa in the first T20I match played at the stadium on Tuesday.
Stating that a proposal to enhance spectator capacity at stadium is already under consideration, the Chief Minister said that the matter will be discussed with stakeholders, and a decision is expected shortly. Improving the infrastructure of one of Odisha’s oldest cricket venues remains a priority, he said
Majhi also appreciated the proposal submitted by the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) to upgrade the stadium and said the state government would provide necessary support. “We will do whatever is necessary to improve the stadium’s seating capacity and facilities,” the CM said.
OCA Secretary Sanjay Behera also confirmed that expansion plans are being examined. According to Behera, discussions on capacity enhancement and modernisation are progressing, and formal proposals are likely to be placed before the authorities soon.
The CM praised the efforts of the OCA, administrative team, police, and other stakeholders involved in hosting the match. Noting that the match was thrilling, he said the Indian team’s performance was outstanding, and the stadium’s management was top-notch.
