Bhubaneswar: A youth, who allegedly killed his minor girlfriend and consumed poison himself in Sarankul area of Nayagarh district, died while undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Purna Nayak of Magarabandh village under the jurisdiction of Sarankul police station of Nayagarh district.
As per sources, Purna was admitted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar in critical condition after he consumed poison following the crime. He died during treatment. Earlier, the minor girl had died at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Nayagarh.
The youth had reportedly been in one-sided love with the minor girl of his village for nearly two years. The girl’s family had reportedly raised concerns with Purna’s parents earlier, alleging that he repeatedly harassed her.
On the fateful day, while the minor girl was proceeding to attend tuition classes, Purna allegedly assaulted her by hitting her on the head with an iron pipe. He then forcibly made her consume poison. He also consumed poison himself.
Both were rushed to the DHH in Nayagarh. Doctors declared the girl brought dead, while Purna was admitted in a critical condition. As news of the incident spread, tension prevailed at the hospital premises. Purna was later referred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where he died on Monday.
Police have launched a detailed investigation into the incident, examining allegations of prolonged harassment and the circumstances leading to the crime.
