Sambalpur: A man reportedly attempted suicide in Odisha’s Sambalpur district after being booked for allegedly betraying a divyang woman despite being in a relationship for a long time with a promise to marry her.
The incident reportedly took place in Naktideul area of the district. The man has been identified as Umakant Behera of Keutberni village.
Sources said Umakant was in a relationship with the divyang woman for the past over two years and had allegedly promised to marry her. However, after the woman became pregnant and pressured him for marriage, Umakant allegedly refused and abandoned her.
After being ditched, the woman lodged a complaint at Naktideul police station on December 14. Acting on the complaint, police registered a case, conducted an investigation and apprehended the accused.
Police claimed that following the registration of the case and his arrest, the man allegedly consumed poison in an apparent attempt to end his life. He was rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Deogarh for treatment. He was provided medical care at the hospital and his condition improved.
After his health condition became stable, Umakant was produced before a court and sent to judicial custody. Further investigation is in progress.
