Bhubaneswa: Sanchita Mohanty, a former BJP legislator who represented the Korei constituency in the Odisha Legislative Assembly, passed away on Friday following prolonged illness. She was 67.
According to sources, Mohanty breathed her last at her residence in Bhubaneswar. She had been suffering from health issues for an extended period and was recently hospitalised for treatment, but her condition failed to improve despite medical intervention.
She entered politics with the BJP and secured victory in the 2004 Assembly elections from Korei in Jajpur district, serving as MLA from 2004 to 2009. She focused on local development initiatives during her tenure. She, however, lost the seat in the subsequent two elections and was replaced by Biswajit Nayak, who had joined the BJP two years ago after quitting Congress, in 2019.
Mohanty was regarded as one of the party’s prominent leaders in Jajpur who played a key role in strengthening the organisation at the grassroots level during its formative years in the district.
Political leaders across party lines, along with constituents from Korei, have expressed grief at her demise.
