Bhubaneswar: To preserve the religious and cultural integrity of the annual Khandagiri Mela, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a stringent prohibition on vulgar or indecent dance performance during Jatra shows during the upcoming fair, scheduled from January 25 to February 7.

The announcement followed a preparatory meeting chaired by Mayor Sulochana Das, attended by corporators, standing committee members, jatra committee representatives, and officials from key departments including electricity, Water Corporation of Odisha (WATCO), Roads and Buildings, and the police. The focus was on ensuring discipline, safety, and smooth conduct of the fair.

Jatra performances will be staged in seven designated pandals, with strict instructions to organisers to comply with the ban on obscene content.

The decision stems from public grievances highlighting how explicit performances in select Jatra troupes have previously undermined the event’s revered atmosphere, causing discomfort among family visitors and devotees.

To bolster security and amenities at the 2026 edition:

>> Approximately 100 CCTV cameras will be deployed throughout the fairgrounds for round-the-clock surveillance.

>> Additional police personnel will be stationed to deter thefts and uphold public order.

>> A dedicated 24-hour control room will operate, staffed by representatives from all relevant departments to handle emergencies and coordinate responses.

>> Dedicated provisions for Naga sadhus and pilgrims, including toilets, potable water supply, adequate lighting, and enhanced security.

>> Supplementary health services, mobile toilet units, and increased drinking water facilities will be made available as needed.

The BMC had imposed a similar ban during last year’s mela following public objections. The civic body reiterated that the restriction will be enforced firmly this year as well to safeguard the traditional and religious essence of the festival. Additionally, police patrolling will be intensified, and parking facilities streamlined to avoid congestion and ensure smooth traffic flow around the mela site.
