New Delhi: Agnivesh Agarwal, the eldest son of Vedanta Group founder and chairman Anil Agarwal, has died at the age of 49 in the United States, following complications after a skiing accident, the family announced.

According to a heartfelt post by his father on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Agnivesh was recovering at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York after a skiing mishap when he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest that led to his death on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.

In his emotional message, Anil Agarwal described the loss as “the darkest day of my life,” adding that his son was “healthy, full of life, and dreams” before fate intervened unexpectedly.

Today is the darkest day of my life.

My beloved son, Agnivesh, left us far too soon. He was just 49 years old, healthy, full of life, and dreams. Following a skiing accident in the US, he was recovering well in Mount Sinai Hospital, New York. We believed the worst was behind us.… pic.twitter.com/hDQEDNI262

Born in Patna on June 3, 1976, Agnivesh received his education at Mayo College, Ajmer, and went on to build a distinguished career in business. He established Fujairah Gold and later served as Chairman of Hindustan Zinc, one of Vedanta Group’s major companies. He also served on the board of Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL), a Vedanta Group subsidiary.

Agnivesh was widely remembered by his father as a sportsman, musician, and leader who remained humble and warm despite his many achievements. “To me, he was not just my son. He was my friend. My pride. My world,” Agarwal wrote.

Following the tragedy, tributes poured in from across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, describing Agnivesh’s sudden passing as deeply shocking and saddening, and offered prayers for strength for the family.

In his tribute, Anil Agarwal also reaffirmed a long-standing family commitment to philanthropy, pledging to dedicate more than 75% of his wealth to social causes in Agnivesh’s memory — focusing on child nutrition, education, women’s empowerment, and meaningful employment for youth.
