Washington: A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck off the coast of Oregon in the United States on Thursday night, according to data from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) as stated in a Hindustan Times report.
The quake occurred at a relatively shallow depth of 10 km (6.21 miles) beneath the ocean floor, GFZ reported, which is a depth where seismic waves can be more strongly felt on the surface.
Local authorities and emergency services are monitoring the situation, but there have been no immediate reports of damage, injuries, or casualties.
The earthquake was detected offshore in a region of the Pacific Northwest where seismic activity occasionally occurs due to movement of tectonic plates, including interactions linked with the nearby Cascadia subduction zone. At the time of reporting, no tsunami warnings had been issued by relevant US agencies.
