Leh, Ladakh: A 5.7 magnitude earthquake hit the Leh-Ladakh region at 11:51 AM IST on Monday, according to data from the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The epicentre was located near 36.71° N latitude and 74.32° E longitude in the seismically active Himalayan belt, with a focal depth of approximately 171 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface, according to a Hindustan Times report.
Tremors from the earthquake were felt across the Ladakh region and parts of the Kashmir Valley. Reports also indicate that the shaking reached into central Asian areas, including near the Tajikistan border.
Despite the strength of the quake, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property.
Local authorities and disaster response teams remain on alert, closely monitoring the situation for possible aftershocks.
The Leh-Ladakh area lies in Seismic Zone IV, a region prone to tectonic activity due to the ongoing collision between the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate, making earthquakes a recurrent natural phenomenon.
