Bhubaneswar: Doctors at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Odisha capital saved the life of 10-month-old boy, who had accidentally inhaled a sharp, metallic LED component from a toy, leading to a critical airway emergency.
The infant was brought to the hospital in severe respiratory distress after accidentally inhaling the razor-sharp object, which posed a significant risk of causing internal injuries due to its dangerous edges.
A multidisciplinary team acted quickly to address the critical emergency. Pulmonologist Dr Debashish Behera led the procedure, using advanced flexible bronchoscopy to carefully extract the foreign body. The anaesthesia team, headed by Dr Amit Pradhan, managed the airway precisely to keep the child safe during the intervention, a hospital release said.
The paediatric care was spearheaded by intensivists Dr Bandya Sahoo, Dr Reshmi Mishra, and Dr Mukesh Kumar Jain, who monitored the child to an uneventful recovery.
Senior doctors described the outcome as a true team effort, underscoring the importance of prompt bronchoscopic removal and seamless collaboration in paediatric emergencies. The medical team also warned parents about the dangers of small, detachable parts in toys. They stressed the need for heightened vigilance, as such items can easily cause choking or aspiration hazard in young children.
