Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Thursday credited Rs 5,000 each to the bank accounts of 4,57,681 women under its flagship Subhadra Yojana.

The disbursement was formally launched by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi at a state-level event held at the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) campus in Bhubaneswar. The direct benefit transfer, amounting to over Rs 315 crore, includes newly enrolled beneficiaries as well as those previously excluded but now reinstated after verification.

While 1,78,398 newly-enrolled women received their first instalment of Rs 5,000, 2,55,265 women, who had been left out earlier due to verification issues, were re-included and received the assistance. Additional 24,018 beneficiaries, added through grievance redressal hearings, also benefited.

Subhadra Yojana, launched in 2024 as a key initiative of the Odisha government, aims to enhance the socio-economic status of women aged 21-60 by providing direct financial support. Eligible women receive Rs 10,000 annually in two equal instalments of Rs 5,000 each. The first instalment is typically released on Rakhi Purnima (Raksha Bandhan), while the second is disbursed on International Women’s Day (March 8).

This phase of payments, initially scheduled for January 18, was rescheduled to January 22 to ensure thorough verification and inclusive coverage, as announced by Deputy Chief Minister and Women & Child Development Minister Pravati Parida.

The scheme has already benefited over one crore women statewide. Beneficiaries also receive a Subhadra Card (an ATM-cum-debit card) to facilitate transactions and promote digital empowerment.
