Ahmedabad: An accidental shooting, and then a deliberate firing. Before anyone knew, two young lives had been snuffed out.
The shocking incident, involving a young couple, took place at a premium highrise in Ahmedabad’s Bodakdev.
Yashrajsinh Gohil, nephew of Congress MP Shaktisinh Gohil, allegedly shot dead his wife accidentally, before turning the weapon on himself.
According to the family’s statement, Yashrajsinh, a Class I officer with the Gujarat Maritime Board, and wife Rajeshwari returned home after dinner at a relative’s residence. In their fifth-floor bedroom at flat A-502, Yashrajsinh accidentally fired his licensed revolver, which was loaded and the bullet hit Rajeshwari at the base of her head.
“Late on Wednesday, Yashrajsinh Gohil accidentally fired a round from his licensed revolver, killing his wife, Rajeshwari. Following this, the 35-year-old shot himself,” said ACP (A-Division) Jitendra Brahmbhatt.
The shootings are believed to have occurred between 11 pm and midnight at NRI Tower on Judges Bungalow Road.
Yashrajsinh’s mother Devyaniba stated that her son rushed to her room soon after hitting his wife, and informed her about the incident, stressing on the urgency of an ambulance to be called immediately.
Devyaniba went to her son’s bedroom to find Rajeshwari lying unconscious in a pool of blood.
Devyaniba said her son was visibly shaken, and asked his mother to step away and “change her clothes”.
Moments later, another gunshot was heard from the bedroom.
As per police records, Yashrajsinh contacted the 108 emergency ambulance service at 11.42 pm. Once the paramedics arrived, Rajeshwari was declared dead.
Devyaniba and the ambulance staff rushed back to the bedroom to find Yashrajsinh lying in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound to the head. He was declared dead on the spot.
Both bodies were sent to Asarwa Civil Hospital for post-mortem.
No foul play
The Congress has ruled out any foul play as there was no marital discord between the young Gohil couple.
The party’s media convener Manish Doshi said the couple had plans to travel abroad and was scheduled to visit the passport office on Thursday.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death, and an investigation is underway.
