New Delhi: President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, attending as the chief guest at India’s 77th Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi, turned heads with a striking choice of attire that blended European elegance with Indian tradition.
Von der Leyen, who is in India along with European Council President António Luís Santos da Costa for the state visit and Republic Day events, wore a maroon-and-gold brocade bandhgala jacket paired with off-white pants — a refined fusion ensemble that drew appreciation for its homage to Indian fashion and the ceremonial occasion.
The Republic Day parade is being held along Delhi’s Kartavya Path, featuring India’s military contingents, cultural tableaux, aerial fly-pasts and a colourful showcase of heritage and national pride.
Ahead of the main parade, von der Leyen took to social media (X) to express her sentiments about being the chief guest, calling it “the honour of a lifetime” and underscoring her belief that a successful India contributes to global stability, prosperity, and security.
India’s 77th Republic Day marked another year since the adoption of its Constitution and was celebrated with elaborate military and cultural displays attended by top national leaders.
President Draupadi Murmu presided over the ceremony, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other dignitaries present.
The inclusion of European Union leadership as chief guests highlighted the deepening India-EU diplomatic and strategic ties at a moment when both sides are engaged in discussions on trade, investment and broader cooperation.
