Kupwara: Security forces on Tuesday recovered a cache of arms and ammunition during a search operation near the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, officials said.
The recovery was made during a joint operation conducted by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of concealed arms in the forward areas close to the LoC. The operation was launched in a forested area known for past infiltration attempts.
Officials said the recovered material included weapons, ammunition, magazines, and other war-like stores. The arms and ammunition were reportedly hidden in underground hideouts, indicating attempts to push weapons across the border for use in militant activities in the region.
A senior security official said the timely recovery had prevented a potential threat to peace and security in the area. “The seized arms were likely meant to support infiltration and terrorist activities in the Kashmir Valley,” the official said.
Following the recovery, security forces intensified search operations in the area to rule out the presence of militants. The entire area was cordoned off as a precautionary measure, and additional troops were deployed to strengthen surveillance along the LoC. No arrests have been reported so far.
Investigations have been initiated to ascertain the source of the arms and the route through which the consignment was brought into the area. Officials said efforts are underway to identify the individuals or groups involved in concealing the arms cache.
Kupwara district, which shares a long stretch of the LoC, has remained a sensitive area due to repeated infiltration attempts in the past.
