Berhampur: TP Southern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPSODL) has strengthened the power distribution infrastructure in Sunabeda of Koraput district by enhancing substation capacity and upgrading key transmission systems. The initiative aims to improve voltage stability, ensure reliable power supply, and support the region’s growing electricity demand.
As part of the initiative, TPSODL commissioned a new 8 MVA power transformer at the Sunabeda Primary Substation, increasing the total substation capacity from 11.3 MVA to 16.15 MVA. The enhancement has been undertaken to resolve voltage-related issues and to support the increasing power load in Sunabeda and surrounding areas.
Previously, the Sunabeda Primary Substation was operating with three transformers of 3.15 MVA, 3.15 MVA and 5 MVA capacity. In view of the rising load, TPSODL replaced one 3.15 MVA transformer with a higher-capacity 8 MVA transformer. The substation is now operating with transformers of 3.15 MVA, 5 MVA and 8 MVA, enabling better load distribution and improved system reliability.
Following the capacity enhancement, voltage levels across the network have improved significantly. Power supply has become more stable, and load management has improved across the entire system. The upgraded configuration will also allow smoother power arrangements during maintenance works, reducing inconvenience to consumers.
Around 7,000 consumers in and around Sunabeda will benefit from the infrastructure strengthening. Areas including Sunabeda NAC Town, Sunabeda NAC Rural, public offices, water supply installations, Jadaguda and parts of Semiliguda Block are expected to receive improved and more reliable electricity supply, with fewer voltage fluctuations.
Sunabeda is a key industrial and urban centre in Koraput district and holds strategic importance in southern Odisha. The township houses the Engine Division of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), a major defence public sector undertaking of the Government of India. The presence of HAL has contributed significantly to industrial activity, urban growth and employment in the region. Sunabeda is also known for its scenic surroundings, tribal culture and tourism potential.
With rapid urbanisation, expansion of residential areas, growth of commercial establishments and increasing economic activity, electricity demand in Sunabeda has been rising steadily. Keeping future requirements in mind, TPSODL planned and executed the present infrastructure augmentation to support long-term development.
In addition to the substation capacity enhancement, TPSODL has completed refurbishment of the 33 kV line connecting the Sunabeda Grid Substation to the Sunabeda Primary Substation. Old and weak connections were replaced with new, high-quality conductors. The internal system of the substation was also strengthened through the installation of a new bus bar arrangement to safely handle higher electrical loads.
The upgraded 33 kV line and reinforced substation system are now capable of handling peak load conditions, improving operational safety and overall system efficiency. The strengthened infrastructure will also support future expansion without affecting service quality.
Commenting on the development, Amit Kumar Garg, CEO, TPSODL, said the company is continuously upgrading its power infrastructure in fast-developing urban and semi-urban areas to meet rising electricity demand. He said Sunabeda is emerging as an important growth centre, and reliable power supply is essential to support industrial, commercial and residential development. He added that the upgradation reflects TPSODL’s commitment to providing stable, quality and uninterrupted power supply while contributing to economic growth and improved quality of life.
