Agra: The Uttar Pradesh Police used Artificial Intelligence (AI) to identify a woman whose mutilated body was recovered from next to the Yamuna Expressway in Agra recently.
Her identification also led the police to her killer.
On Friday, the police received information of a body, wrapped in a blanket, lying beside the highway in the Khandauli area.
It was the body of a woman with serious injuries to the neck and face. It was clear that her killer had tried to disfigure her, so she may not be identified. The police also realised that the woman had been killed elsewhere and the body dumped next to the highway.
Routine investigation followed. A dog squad was called and forensics experts collected samples. There were no identity documents near the body, but the police spotted two tattoos on her arm. They were “RS” and “Sunny”.
Photographs of the body were circulated to all Police stations in the area and beyond to try and match it with any recent missing persons reports. This did not help.
With conventional methods yielding no results, the police turned to AI, as reported by NDTV.
AI tools were used to reconstruct the woman’s facial features. The image of the body was digitally redrawn. Most importantly, the process involved opening the woman’s eyes digitally to approximate a more lifelike appearance.
The enhanced image was then processed through an application designed to generate a clearer facial profile. Finally, the system came up with a recognisable face.
Once this image was circulated, it did not take long for the woman to be identified. She was identified as Sonali, a 25-year-old resident of Mahoba.
Further investigation revealed that Sunny was a person of interest. He was tracked down and taken into custody.
Sunny broke during interrogation and confessed that Sonali had left her home to live with him. They were in a live-in relationship.
After some time, Sunny decided to get rid of her. He killed her, wrapped the body in a blanket, transported it to the Yamuna Expressway and dumped it.
