Bhubaneswar: A brazen daylight snatching of a gold chain from an 80-year-old woman, reported to be the mother of a serving police officer, has shocked residents in Bhubaneswar’s Chandrasekharpur.
The incident took place at around 9 am on Tuesday, when the elderly woman was returning home from her morning walk. “I was on my way back from my morning walk when a scooter suddenly pulled up beside me. In a flash, the pillion rider snatched the gold chain from around my neck. I quickly bent to retrieve the fallen locket, but by then the thieves had already zoomed off. I have been hearing about chain-snatching incidents, but experiencing it myself was really shocking. I have decided to stop wearing gold chains and use a thread instead,” said the visibly shaken woman while recounting her ordeal.
Later, the woman went back to the spot along with her daughter-in-law and got the footage of the incident which was captured on a CCTV camera of a house in the neighbourhood. This, however, was not the first such scare for the family, the victim’s daughter-in-law reportedly faced a failed chain-snatching attempt 3–4 years ago.
Meanwhile, police have launched an investigation to nab the culprits on basis of a complaint lodged by the woman.
