Canberra: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was evacuated from his official residence here on Tuesday over a security threat, police said.
Australia’s national broadcaster ABC reported that PM Albanese was taken from The Lodge to a different location for several hours after the threat was identified.
Australian Federal Police said in a statement that they had responded to “an alleged security incident” around 6 pm (12.30 pm IST).
“About 6 pm today, the AFP (Australian Federal Police) responded to an alleged security incident within the ACT,” police said.
A thorough search of “a protection establishment” was conducted for three hours, but nothing suspicious found in the residence, Australian police said.
Police added there was no current threat “to the community or public safety.”
“Further information will be provided at an appropriate time,” the police statement said.
Albanese had recorded a one-hour interview with a journalist at The Lodge earlier in the day.
The Prime Minister and several federal MPs have faced multiple security threats in recent months. Albanese’s public appearances have also seen a heightened security presence.
