Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of undermining democracy by misusing agencies and commissions against her state, pushing a “One Nation, One Leader, One Party” frenzy.
In a strong post on X, Banerjee alleged that democratic institutions and constitutional offices are being weaponised for political gains, targeting Bengal through voter deletions and other tactics.
“What we are witnessing today is unprecedented, deeply unfortunate, and a direct assault on the democratic foundations of this republic. In their ‘One Nation, One Leader, One Party’ frenzy, the BJP has systematically weaponised every democratic institution and every constitutional post to serve their own Jono-Birodhi ambitions,” she wrote.
Banerjee further claimed that for years, central agencies, national commissions, “servile Godi Media,” and parts of the judiciary have been unleashed on West Bengal. She specifically accused the Election Commission — mockly called “Vanish Commission” — of erasing legitimate voters from electoral rolls ahead of elections.
Her outburst came amid a three-day dharna here protesting voter list revisions, as the Election Commission visited to assess poll preparedness. Banerjee vowed Bengal’s resistance, branding BJP as “Delhi zamindars” with a “Bangla-Birodhi” agenda, drawing parallels to the state’s historic fight against colonial rule.
The TMC supremo reiterated her government’s commitment to protecting citizens’ voting rights, urging people to stand united against what she termed an assault on the Constitution framed by B R Ambedkar.
