Khurda: In a tragic incident, a man and his son were charred to death after a fire broke out at a grocery shop where they were sleeping in Odisha’s Khurda district.

The deceased have been identified as Rajesh Sahu and his son Laxmidhar Sahu of Sanapadar village under the jurisdiction of Begunia police station.

Rajesh reportedly ran a small grocery shop in the village. They were sleeping inside the shop when the fire erupted late on Saturday night. Sources said both had dinner and went to sleep inside the shop as usual. However, a fire reportedly broke out in the shop late at night. The flames spread rapidly and engulfed the entire structure, trapping the two inside. Both died after sustaining severe burn injuries.

The incident came to light on Sunday morning when villagers noticed the gutted shop and smoke bellowing out. On entering the premises, they found the charred bodies of the two and alerted the police.

A team of Begunia police rushed to the spot, recovered the bodies, and launched an investigation into the incident.

While police suspect that the mishap might have been triggered by an electrical short circuit or another accidental reason, investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of the fire.
