Riyadh: Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defence on Sunday announced multiple successful interceptions of hostile drones across the kingdom’s central, eastern and northern regions, marking a significant escalation in aerial activity.
The ministry’s most recent update confirmed that Saudi air defences had “intercepted and destroyed 10 hostile drones” detected over Riyadh and the eastern provinces. This operation reflects the ongoing vigilance of defence forces in addressing incursions targeting key areas of the country.
Just an hour earlier, the ministry issued another statement verifying the destruction of two additional drones in the eastern region. Based on that, officials had previously reported neutralising seven more drones over the central and eastern territories, demonstrating a rapid sequence of defensive actions within a compressed timeframe.
To the north, the ministry gave details how air defence units “intercepted and destroyed a drone” upon its detection in the airspace above the Al-Jawf region. The prompt engagement ensured the threat was eliminated short of any protected zones or infrastructure.
These incidents follows a larger barrage earlier in the week, when Saudi defence systems intercepted nearly 50 drones over just a few hours on Friday morning. As cited by Euro News, authorities described the volume as an “unusually high level of aerial threats for Saudi Arabia,” signalling the exceptional nature of the sustained attacks.
Reports said King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh continues to operate normally despite the interceptions nearby. No damage to airport facilities or interruptions to flight operations have been reported.
