Bhubaneswar: Shortly after its commencement amid heavy rain and gusty wind, the Rukuna Rath Yatra of Lord Lingaraj celebrated in Bhubaneswar on the occasion of Ashokastami on Thursday, the chariot procession was stopped midway for the day.
As per information, the chariot of Lord Lingaraj stopped near Badhei Banka square.
Undeterred by heavy rain and strong gusty winds triggered by a nor’wester, devotees continued pulling the chariot with great enthusiasm and devotion. However, the procession was disrupted after the wooden chariot suddenly veered off its intended path.
Sources said the Rukuna Rath climbed onto a roadside drain during the procession, causing a temporary loss of control. In the process, the chariot slightly brushed against nearby houses, creating panic among locals. No major damage have been reported due to the incident so far.
Officials and volunteers quickly stepped in to ensure the safety of devotees and residents.
In view of the risks posed by the weather and the position of the chariot, it was decided to suspend the journey for the day.
Sources said the chariot will remain stationed at Badhei Banka square and the pulling will resume on Friday after necessary arrangements are made to safely realign the chariot on its designated route.
Notably, the pulling of the chariot was earlier delayed due to delay in the performance of the rituals of Lord Lingaraj.
Thousands of devotees gather to witness the Rukuna Rath Yatra, one of the popular festivals of Bhubaneswar.
