New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday alleged that the previous AAP government left Delhi with a debt burden of about Rs 47000 crore, posing financial hurdles.
Addressing the Delhi Assembly on the final day of the Budget session, Gupta said her government had inherited significant liabilities, of which ₹27,547 crore remains outstanding. She stated that her administration is focusing on managing these liabilities while maintaining financial transparency.
The chief minister made the remarks in the context of the Delhi Budget for the financial year 2026-2027, which proposes an outlay of ₹1,03,700 crore. According to the government, the budget prioritises spending on infrastructure development, healthcare, education, environmental initiatives and social welfare programmes.
Gupta emphasised that her government intends to balance fiscal discipline with development spending, highlighting efforts to ensure accountability in public finances. The budget was subsequently passed by the Delhi Assembly after discussions during the session.
Meanwhile, the budget has triggered political reactions, with opposition parties criticising the government’s financial approach and policy priorities, reflecting continuing tensions between the ruling BJP and the AAP.
The debate over Delhi’s finances comes amid ongoing political rivalry between the BJP and AAP, with both sides accusing each other of financial mismanagement and governance failures. The budget session also witnessed disagreements between the government and opposition members over legislative and administrative issues.
