Burla: A first-year postgraduate medical student at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla, allegedly tried to end her life by consuming 30-32 sleeping pills (phenobarbital).
She was rescued in time and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on Saturday, where she is currently undergoing treatment. Her condition is stable, according to the institute’s in-charge Director, Lal Mohan Nayak.
Sources said the student had previously raised concerns about her demanding work schedule and duty timings, though she did not file a formal complaint with the authorities. While her family has declined to comment on the matter, she is also suspected to have taken the extreme step following alleged harassment by her department head.
Her husband is pursuing his postgraduate studies at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, sources added.
Meanwhile, institute officials have cautioned against jumping to conclusions. They emphasised that the exact reasons behind the incident will only become clear once the student recovers fully and is able to share her account.
Burla police said that no complaint has so far been filed on the matter.
