New Delhi: India’s largest airline IndiGo has appointed Willie Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer, the company said on Tuesday. This marks a high-profile leadership change as the carrier accelerates its global ambitions.

Walsh is currently the director general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). His tenure there will conclude on July 31, 2026, and he is expected to join IndiGo no later than August 3, 2026. His appointment is subject to regulatory approvals, as reported by India Today.

He will succeed Pieter Elbers, who stepped down as CEO on March 10 this year.

According to industry experts, Walsh brings decades of leadership experience in global aviation. As head of IATA, he has been a central figure shaping industry responses to issues such as airline profitability, sustainability targets and regulatory frameworks.

Prior to IATA, Walsh led the International Airlines Group, the parent company of British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus. He is widely credited with steering complex airline operations and large-scale restructurings.

His appointment comes at a pivotal time for IndiGo as the airline moves beyond its traditional low-cost, short-haul model and expands into long-haul international markets.

IndiGo has placed orders for wide-body planes and other larger aircraft, with the aim to expand its international footprint across Europe and Asia, and intensified competition with full-service carriers on global routes.

The experience that Walsh possesses in managing international airline networks is expected to support IndiGo’s transition into a more globally competitive carrier.

According to officials, the move highlights IndiGo’s intent to align itself more closely with global aviation standards and leadership as India emerges as one of the fastest-growing air travel markets.
