New Delhi: India will participate in talks convened by the UK on the Strait of Hormuz. The Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed that New Delhi is also in contact with Iran to ensure the safe passage of Indian vessels through the strategic waterway.
The MEA said Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri will represent India at the discussions, which are part of diplomatic efforts aimed at ensuring maritime security and reopening the shipping corridor.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India has been maintaining communication with Iran. This was being done to safeguard the movement of Indian ships carrying essential commodities. He noted that recent engagements helped several Indian vessels cross the strait.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical sea routes. The UK-led meeting reportedly involves many countries and is focused on exploring diplomatic and practical measures to restore safe navigation.
Tensions around the strait have escalated following the ongoing conflict in the region.
