Mumbai: The legendary Asha Bhosle breathed her last at the age of 92 on Sunday, leaving behind a body of work which will be hard to replicate.
Over the years, the versatile singer spoke about her life, career and aspirations, including a cherished wish — to see her granddaughter Zanai carry forward her legacy.
Zanai was 12 years old when Asha shared at an event in 2014 that she wanted to groom her as a playback singer.
Zanai, daughter of Asha’s youngest son Anand Bhosle, was 12 years old at that time, having already made her singing debut in the 2013 film ‘Mai’, which also featured the veteran singer.
“I have done everything I want in life – singing, acting, TV shows, stage shows. I also recently walked the ramp during a fashion show. I think my next target is to groom my granddaughter as a playback singer,” Asha had said.
“She has a very wonderful voice – a mixture of mine and Lata didi. I want to prepare her as a singer myself,” Asha said.
Zanai has tried to keep her grandmom’s faith in her, blending her classical training and lessons with contemporary pop. However, Zanai is also dabbling in other forms of entertainment, such as acting.
Zanai is set to make her acting debut as Rani Sai Bhonsale, in ‘The Pride of Bharat – Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’. Directed by Sandeep Singh, the historical film also features Rishab Shetty and Shefali Shah, and is scheduled to hit theatres early next year.
It was in January this year that Asha wished Zanai the very best when her first song ‘Kehndi Hai’ was released.
“My granddaughter Zanai starts her beautiful journey as a singer with her first release – Kehndi hai. I wish her all the very best 🙏🏼,” Asha wrote on X on January 28, 2025. It turned out to be her last post on X.
