Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Vigilance sleuths on Wednesday apprehended Anit Kumar Guru, a section officer in the office of the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) and Public Health Officer (PHO) in Jharsuguda, for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 2,500.
Guru was nabbed while accepting the bribe from a teacher at a General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) Training School in the district. The bribe was sought to expedite the processing of an application seeking permission to attach GNM students to Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and Community Health Centres (CHCs) for practical training during the 2026-27 academic session.
According to vigilance officials, the teacher approached Guru for the necessary attachment approval. Instead of processing the application promptly, he allegedly demanded Rs 2,500 as a bribe. Frustrated by the repeated demands and unwilling to bribe, the teacher informed the Odisha Vigilance authorities.
Acting on the complaint, a vigilance team laid a trap and apprehended Guru red-handed while he was accepting the bribe money. The entire amount of Rs 2,500 was recovered from his possession and seized as evidence.
Vigilance sources indicated that Guru had been facing prior allegations of harassing nursing training schools in the district and repeatedly demanding bribes for processing similar applications.
Following the trap, simultaneous searches are underway at two locations linked to the accused to ascertain his disproportionate assets (DA).
A case has been registered at Rourkela Vigilance police station under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, and further investigation is underway.
