Chhatrapur: A motorcycle crashed into a tree in Odisha’s Ganjam district last night, critically injuring two persons who later died.
The deceased have been identified as Basant Swain and Sandeep Behera, who hail from Kaliaguda village under Gangpur police limits. Sandeep was a serving member of the Indian Army. Officials from the Army have been informed about his death, and a guard of honour is expected to be accorded during his funeral.
According to sources, Basant and Sandeep had travelled to Lathipada village under Surada police limits for a feast. While returning home on a motorcycle, they were caught in a sudden and intense Kalabaisakhi storm that brought strong winds and heavy rain. The two-wheeler possibly veered off the road, and crashed with a tree after the rider lost control over it during the raging storm. Both sustained severe injuries and were rushed to sub-divisional hospital at Bhanjanagar by locals. However, they succumbed during treatment.
Bhanjanagar police have seized the damaged motorcycle and are probing the exact cause of the accident. The bodies will be handed over to their families for the final rites after a postmortem, sources added.
