New Delhi: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), in collaboration with the Department of Telecommunications, is conducting countrywide tests of a cutting-edge Cell Broadcast system designed to send immediate emergency notifications to every mobile device in a designated zone simultaneously.

If your phone emitted a shrill beep or showed an abrupt “Extremely Severe Alert” on Wednesday, stay calm — it’s not an emergency. India’s government is conducting this home-developed Cell Broadcast alert mechanism to beam instant disaster updates straight to phones in affected regions, as reported by NDTV.

Test Text: No Action Needed

The on-screen alert declared: “India launches Cell Broadcast using indigenous technology for instant disaster alerting service for its citizens. Alert citizens, safe nation. No action is required by the public upon receipt of this message. This is a test message. Government of India.” It included a Hindi translation right underneath. This was solely a simulation, requiring zero public response.

Local Tech Sidesteps Congestion

The effort, spearheaded by DoT under the Ministry of Communications alongside NDMA, links into the SACHET alert hub crafted by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT).

Distinct from regular SMS, these Cell Broadcast notifications flood all devices in a geographic area instantly, bypassing network jams for superior reach amid crises when calls and data overload.

Home Tech Sharpens Disaster Alerts

Rolled out to complement SMS-based alerts, it targets urgent threats like tsunamis, quakes, lightning, and industrial incidents such as gas leaks or chemical spills.

C-DOT spearheaded the fully indigenous design and rollout, supporting the national drive for self-reliant telecom tech and systems.

Language Tests: Simple Settings

Amid the pan-India deployment, live trials gauge effectiveness and stability ahead of official launch. People could see test alerts in English, Hindi, or local languages on their devices.

Officials explain that repeated messages may occur as diverse network towers undergo checks—this is standard. The government stresses no reply is necessary.

Control Tests Via Settings

Such tests reach only mobiles with Cell Broadcast enabled: navigate to Settings, then Safety and Emergency, then Wireless Emergency Alerts, then Test Alerts to adjust.

These are scheduled national exercises needing no user input. Post-trials, upon go-live, the system will activate seamlessly in actual crises, alerting locals in seconds.
