Bhubaneswar: In a major development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday appointed Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi as observer and co-observer respectively for the election of the legislature party leader in West Bengal.
A press release issued by BJP National General Secretary Arun Singh said that the party’s Parliamentary Board has designated Amit Shah as the central observer for the crucial exercise, while Majhi has been appointed as co-observer.
The appointment assumes significance as the two leaders will oversee the process of electing the BJP Legislature Party leader in West Bengal, a move that is likely to pave the way for deciding the party’s chief ministerial face in the state.
Political observers are closely watching the development, with Shah’s direct involvement indicating the importance the BJP leadership is attaching to West Bengal’s political landscape. The inclusion of Mohan Majhi is also being seen as a strategic decision by the party high command.
The legislature party meeting is expected to take place shortly, following which a clear picture may emerge on who will be projected as the BJP’s chief ministerial choice for West Bengal.
It may be noted that BJP has registered a landslide victory in West Bengal and is set to form government in the state for the first time. The Lotus party has won 206 seats to secure more than two-thirds majority in the Bengal Assembly, ending the TMC’s 15-year rule.
