Bhubaneswar: Commissionerate Police on Tuesday busted two separate ganja smuggling rackets in Bhubaneswar using ambulance and luxury vehicles as cover to evade suspicion and run the illegal operation.
In the first case, Nayapalli police arrested two persons and seized over 50 kg of ganja being smuggled in an ambulance as a cover to avoid detection.
According to sources, officials of Nayapalli police station received credible information of ganja being smuggled from Khurda and waited for it on National Highway (NH) 16. After spotting the ambulance, they intercepted it and conducted a thorough search. Police discovered the ganja stored inside a specially designed secret chamber and seized it. The man driving the vehicle, and another lying inside the ambulance acting as a patient have been apprehended.
In another case, Khandagiri police caught a person while allegedly attempting to smuggle ganja from Kandhamal district to Bhubaneswar. He was caught carrying the contraband in a Thar vehicle at Raghunath Nagar near Dumduma during patrolling.
The accused has been detained for questioning, and the ganja as well as the vehicle used in transportation were seized. Police have filed cases and launched investigations into the origin and destination of the seized ganja. Officials are trying to uncover the links of the accused to larger smuggling networks.
