Bhubaneswar: Bhadrak SP Manoj Kumar Rout on Sunday suspended two police constables after a rape accused, who had been on the run for nearly seven years, escaped from custody while being produced in court.
The incident occurred on May 7 at Chandbali Court premises when the accused, Debabrata Das of Kuamara village under Bansada police station limits, managed to flee while being escorted by two constables from Bansada police station.
Das was wanted in a 2019 rape case involving a minor girl. He had evaded arrest for several years before being apprehended recently on the basis of a warrant.
Following the escape, an inquiry was conducted by the Additional Superintendent of Police, who reportedly found negligence on the part of the constables in handling the accused. While the constables have been suspended, police teams have been formed to nab the accused, sources said.
