Chennai: From Raajneeti to Nayak, Indian cinema has often romanticised the idea of friends turning into political rivals. Tamil Nadu politics appears to have found its own real-life version of that storyline after a 15-year-old photograph featuring actor-turned-politician Vijay and Udhayanidhi Stalin went viral on social media this week.
The image, reportedly taken during a film industry event some years ago, shows a young Vijay and Udhayanidhi smiling together at a time when both were still deeply rooted in Tamil cinema. Today, the same two men stand on opposite sides of the political aisle — Vijay as Tamil Nadu’s new Chief Minister and Udhayanidhi Stalin as the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly.
The viral photograph has triggered nostalgia and intense political chatter online, with many social media users describing it as a “full-circle moment” in Tamil Nadu politics. Several Instagram and Facebook posts sharing the image highlighted how dramatically the political landscape has changed in just over a decade.
Vijay, one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars, formally entered politics by launching his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), positioning himself as an alternative to the long-dominant Dravidian parties. His political rise gathered momentum rapidly after he announced that he would fully focus on politics following his film commitments.
The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election turned out to be historic. TVK emerged as the single-largest party, effectively breaking the decades-long dominance of the DMK and AIADMK in the state. Vijay later staked claim to form the government with support from allies and was sworn in as the 22nd Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
The election also marked a major setback for the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Former Chief Minister MK Stalin lost power after the party’s disappointing performance. In the aftermath, Udhayanidhi Stalin — who had earlier served as Deputy Chief Minister — was chosen as the DMK legislature party leader and subsequently became the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly.
Political observers say the symbolism of the old photograph goes beyond nostalgia. Both Vijay and Udhayanidhi came from cinema backgrounds, inherited massive public recognition, and eventually transitioned into politics — but through very different routes. While Udhayanidhi climbed through the DMK’s organisational structure under the shadow of the Karunanidhi-Stalin political legacy, Vijay built his political identity around anti-establishment messaging and mass popularity among younger voters.
Now, the two former film-world contemporaries are set for a direct face-off in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, with Vijay leading the government and Udhayanidhi heading the opposition benches — a political script few would have imagined when that now-viral picture was first taken.
