New Delhi: Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi is expected to visit India later this week for the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New Delhi.
His visit will be important, considering the unrest in the Middle East, resulting in a global energy crisis.
The Foreign Ministers’ meeting will serve as a precursor to the 18th BRICS Summit scheduled in New Delhi in September. Top world leaders, including Russian president Vladimir Putin, are expected to attend the summit during which rising geopolitical tensions and growing global uncertainty will be discussed.
Araghchi has spoken to Indian external affairs minister S Jaishankar on at least four occasions since the US-Iran conflict began on February 28.
The escalating crisis in West Asia and broader geopolitical developments were discussed.
Araghchi is known to have briefed Jaishankar on the evolving situation following what Tehran described as US and Israeli attacks, warning about their impact on regional and global stability, as reported by India Today.
The Iranian foreign minister also called for greater coordination among BRICS nations to help maintain international stability and reiterated Iran’s commitment to exercising what it termed its “legitimate right of self-defence.”
Araghchi also co-chaired the 20th India-Iran Joint Commission Meeting in Delhi in May, marking his first visit to the country since assuming office in August 2024.
The May 7–8 meeting was held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the India-Iran Friendship Treaty and focused on reviewing key bilateral issues while exploring ways to deepen political, economic and strategic cooperation between the two countries.
During that visit, the Iranian leader held bilateral talks with Jaishankar and also called on President Droupadi Murmu.
