Bhubaneswar: Seven inmates of the high-security Jharpada Special jail in Bhubaneswar fell ill under mysterious circumstances, prompting the authorities to launch a detailed probe on Wednesday.
According to preliminary information, the inmates were initially provided medical attention in the prison complex and later shifted to Capital Hospital for treatment after their condition deteriorated. All the seven are stated to be undertrial prisoners.
Of the seven prisoners, five were admitted to Capital Hospital, while two inmates were treated at the jail hospital. As the health condition of three prisoners turned critical, they were shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for specialised treatment. Later, two inmates were referred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for advanced medical care, sources said.
While the exact reason behind the sudden illness is yet to be established, authorities have launched a detailed investigation to ascertain what caused the incident.
Meanwhile, security arrangements have been strengthened at Capital Hospital, where the affected prisoners are undergoing treatment under close supervision.
A medical team is continuously monitoring the health condition of the critically ill inmates.
Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena visited Capital Hospital and reviewed the health status of the prisoners. Senior prison officials, including Headquarters DIG (Prisons) Biren Sahoo and Jail DIG Anusaya Jena, also visited Jharpada Jail to take stock of the situation and oversee the inquiry.
Officials are examining multiple angles, including allegations of substance abuse inside the prison. CCTV footage installed across the jail premises is being scrutinised as part of the investigation. However, the jail authorities have clarified that there is currently no evidence suggesting food poisoning.
Jail Superintendent Sarbeswar Sahoo said the inmates had visited the jail hospital before their health worsened. He said a reaction to medication is being considered as one of the possible reasons behind the incident. At the same time, authorities have not ruled out any possibility and have assured a transparent investigation.
Officials have warned that strict action will be taken if any illegal substance-related activity is detected during the inquiry. The investigation has been initiated under the direction of the Director General of Prisons.
Meanwhile, one of the inmates who had been shifted to AIIMS, identified as Maoist leader Rupu Singh, has reportedly recovered and been discharged, later returning to jail. The health condition of the remaining inmates continues to be monitored closely.
Regarding stepped up security for hospitalised prisoners, DCP Meena said Police have arranged guards for everyone, and a special team has also been deployed.
