Mumbai: Amid the controversy over DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin’s detention, actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has voiced her support for the police action.
Calling it a “good precedent,” Kangana said public figures must be held accountable for their words and that vulgar remarks have no place in a civilised society.
A political storm erupted in Tamil Nadu after Stalin was detained by the police on Tuesday over remarks he made during a public rally a day earlier.
The action followed complaints filed by the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Chief Minister Vijay, with the police and the National Commission for Women (NCW), alleging that his comments were offensive and targeted actor Trisha Krishnan.
Reacting to the controversy on her Instagram Stories, Kangana wrote, “Public display of filthy abuses, double meaning obscene and vulgar jokes is not acceptable to any civilised society. Mr Stalin was sent to jail for the offence, he might be out on bail by now but it is a good precedent.”
Meanwhile, police detained Stalin from his Chennai residence on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters while being escorted by the police, he dismissed the action as “a comedy” and maintained that he had neither named anyone nor made any objectionable remarks.
“I am ready to face the consequences, and I am not afraid of arrest,” he said.
Defending Stalin, senior DMK leader T.R. Baalu rejected the allegations, saying, “These are cooked-up false stories.”
For the unversed, during a public rally while speaking about the Cauvery water issue, Stalin criticised the Tamil Nadu government.
As members of the audience chanted actor Trisha’s name, Stalin smiled and made a remark that his political opponents alleged was directed at the actor.
The comments sparked a political controversy, with the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) filing complaints with the police and the National Commission for Women (NCW), alleging that the remarks were offensive.
