Bhubaneswar: The first-ever all-women mountaineering team from Odisha is embarking on an ambitious expedition to Mount Yunam in Himachal Pradesh.
In a landmark event for women empowerment and adventure sports in the state, 11 female climbers will leave for the Yunam Expedition from Bhubaneswar on August 7.
At the formal launch of the journey at the Tennis Auditorium of Kalinga Stadium on Thursday, it was informed that the team will attempt to summit the 20,100-feet peak on 15th August on the occasion of India’s 80th Independence Day.
The climbers will unfurl an 80-metre-long National flag, symbolising patriotism, unity and the spirit of woman empowerment, amid the grandeur of the Himalayas.
The 11-member team comprises five experienced mountaineers, five women on their maiden high-altitude expedition and a 13-year-old adventure enthusiast Aradhya Jena.
The expedition will follow the structured acclimatisation route in Himanchal Pradesh, passing through Solang Valley, Jispa and Bharatpur before the team establishes Camp 1 and prepares for the summit attempt.
The expedition is being organised by the Association for Adventure & Social Activities (AASA), Odisha, in association with Sanket Communications.
