Bhubaneswar: Eleven Post-Diploma DNB seats have been approved in three government medical colleges of Odisha, paving the way for specialist doctors to provide healthcare services at almost every level in the state.
The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) in New Delhi has approved a total of 11 Post-Diploma DNB seats in five broad specialties in three government medical colleges of the state.
These accredited seats are in important departments like Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, T.B. & C.D. and Anaesthesiology. These seats have been accredited in Shri Jagannath Medical College and Hospital in Puri, Bhimbhoi Medical College and Hospital in Balangir, and Shaheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput.
Out of the total 11 seats, 05 seats will be reserved for the doctors working in Odisha and 06 seats will be available under the all-India quota.
This new post-diploma DNB training opportunity will increase the number of specialist doctors in the state. This will help in making better and quality healthcare available to the people of the state more easily.
Through this initiative, the doctors of the state will get more opportunities to continue their government service and acquire higher postgraduate training and expertise. This will prove to be a new milestone in the development journey of medical education in Odisha.
Speaking on the development, Odisha Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling said yhis has been possible due to the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. The continuous support and guidance of the Central and state governments towards expanding medical education in the state, creating more training opportunities for doctors and providing better healthcare to the people of Odisha is bringing a new light in the health sector.
With the approval of this seat, it will be easier for post-diploma DNB specialist doctors to provide services in PHCs, community health centres (CHCs), and sub-district hospitals, he said.
Meanwhile, Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw has recommended works worth Rs 3.10 crore under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) for healthcare infrastructure in Baleshwar district, an official release said on Wednesday.
The recommendations cover works worth Rs 1.40 crore at the Sub-Divisional Hospital (SDH), Nilagiri, and Rs 1.70 crore at the Baleshwar District Headquarters Hospital (DHH).
The proposed works at SDH, Nilagiri include upgradation of the IPD, Drug Ware House, Patient Rest Room, Casualty, Refreshment Hall, Surgery Ward and OT, SDMO Office and OPD Block. The detailed item-wise works and their approximate costs are provided in Annexure I.
At the DHH, the proposed works include upgradation of the Medicine Block, Drug Ware House, Mother Child Complex, Casualty, Anti-Retroviral Therapy Centre, Surgery Ward and OT. The proposal also includes construction of a Patient Rest Room and upgradation of the Refreshment Hall at the OPD Block under DHH.

A functioning casualty ward, a clean rest room, a well-stocked drug store – the recommended works are aimed at strengthening exactly these essentials.
An upgraded Mother Child Complex means safer care for mother and child during childbirth. A strengthened Anti-Retroviral Therapy Centre means patients on long-term treatment get a more dignified space to return to, visit after visit.
