Washington, DC: US president Donald Trump has cited India’s election system while renewing his call for the passage of the Save America Act.
This Act seeks stricter voter identification and citizenship requirements in US elections.
India’s Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had earlier asked his administration how elections could be held in the US without a valid photo ID, Trump said In a post on Truth Social, as reported by The Indian Express.
“Earlier this month, India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, asked our Administration ‘How can you have Elections in the US without a valid Photo ID?'” Trump wrote.
Trump claimed that India’s last election involved 646 million voters, with less than 1% voting by mail, and said every voter was required to present a valid photo identity document.
“India’s last Election had 646,000,000 Voters! Less than 1% voted by mail, and every single Voter had to have a VALID Photo Identity Document,” he added.
The US president then repeated his call for Congress to act, saying: “We need to pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT, now.”
The SAVE America Act short for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act is a bill that would require people to show proof of citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, before they can register to vote in federal elections.
It would also set a nationwide photo ID rule for voters and put new limits on voting by mail, cutting back the wider mail-in options many states brought in during the pandemic.
Since returning to office for his second term, Trump has raised the bill repeatedly, arguing that stricter ID and citizenship checks are required to stop election fraud.
Democratic lawmakers, who are critics of the bill, say voter fraud through non-citizens is already rare and that stricter ID and documentation rules could make it harder for eligible voters, especially those without easy access to passports or birth records to register and vote.
