Bhubaneswar: The low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal is set to intensify further, raising the likelihood of heavy to extremely heavy rain in Odisha over one week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday.

The low-pressure area, which formed at 5.30 am over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-North Odisha coasts, is likely to become more marked and move west-north-westwards across North Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal during the next 48 hours, it said.

Under its influence, several parts of Odisha are likely to be pounded by rainfall of varied intensity till the morning of September 5. The weather agency has issued red, orange and yellow warnings for several districts during the period.

In a special weather bulletin, the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar issued a red warning of heavy to very and also extremely heavy rain in some places over the district of Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, and Mayurbhanj during the next 24 hours.

During the same period, an orange warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall was issued for the districts of Jajpur, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Anugola, Dhenkanal, and Kendujhar, while yellow alert was sounded in Sundaragada, Baragada, Sambalpur, Debagada, Subarnapur, Boudh, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamala, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagada districts.

Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (wind speed reaching up to 40-50 kmph) may occur at one or two places over Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj.

On August 30-31, a red warning of heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy rain was issed in Baleshwar, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj districts.

Similarly, an orange warning has been issued for Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kataka, Sundaragada, Sambalpur, Debagada, Anugola, and Dhenkanal districts, while yellow alert was sounded for the districts Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Jharsuguda, Baragada, Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagada.

On August 31-Sept 1, the IMD has issued an orange warning of heavy to very heavy over the districts of Sundaragada, Jharsuguda, Baragada, Sambalpur, and Nuapada, while yellow alert was sounded in Baleshwar, Debagada, Anugola, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Subarnapur, Boudh, Balangir, Kalahandi, and Kandhamala.

On Sept 1-2, the weather agency has issued an orange warning of heavy to very heavy rain over the districts of Jharsuguda, and Baragada, while yellow alert was sounded Sundaragada, Sambalpur, Subarnapur, Nuapada, and Balangir.

Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind may occur at one or two places over the districts Sundaragada, Jharsuguda, Baragada, Sambalpur, Subarnapur, Nuapada, and Balangir.

Squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph occasionally gusting to 60 kmph is is likely to prevail along and off the Odisha coast till August 31, while sea conditions may be rough to very rough during the period. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along and off the Odisha coast till August 31.
