United Nations: US President Donald Trump has once again attributed the end of last year’s India-Pakistan hostilities to his intervention, listing the two nuclear-armed neighbours among eight conflicts he said were settled since he took office.
Addressing the General Debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, Trump said Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had personally acknowledged his role in bringing the confrontation to an end. According to Trump, Sharif also said his intervention had saved 30 million lives, “and probably many more than that”.
“Since I took office, it has been my great honour to settle eight wars, and in so doing, become friendly with the leaders of many of those countries,” Trump said.
He named Cambodia and Thailand, Kosovo and Serbia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, Pakistan and India, Armenia and Azerbaijan, and the war in Gaza while outlining the conflicts he claimed to have helped resolve.
Trump said he had relied on what he described as his “very special relationships” with the leaders involved. He added that trade, tariffs, the threat of tariffs and other measures had also been used, depending on the circumstances of each country, as reported by India Today.
Sharif Praised Intervention: Trump
Trump further claimed that the leaders of the countries involved had written to him to express their appreciation for his efforts to stop the fighting.
“The Prime Minister of Pakistan, terrific man, said that Donald Trump was responsible for saving 30 million lives and probably many more than that,” he said.
The US president has made similar assertions repeatedly since May 2025, when India and Pakistan announced an agreement to halt military action. Trump had then said the two sides had accepted a “full and immediate” ceasefire after what he called a “long night” of negotiations.
India Rejects Trump’s Mediation Claim
India has rejected the claim of US involvement, saying Washington did not mediate the ceasefire. According to New Delhi, the decision to halt the clashes emerged from direct discussions between the military operations chiefs of India and Pakistan — their respective Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs).
According to India’s position, no third party played a role in the understanding reached between the military establishments of the two countries.
Trump had also claimed credit for ending the India-Pakistan conflict during his address to the UN General Assembly last year.
