New York: Amid serious debates and discussions over the real potential of artificial intelligence (AI), Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates has backed warnings issued by some of the AI leaders in recent days.
In a major warning, Gates said that AI could trigger events which could kill billions of people.
“AI is certainly powerful enough to drive events that, you know, cause a billion deaths,” Gates told NBC’s Meet the Press.
“There’s never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of people with ill intent using the latest AI tools,” he added.
Gates called for lawmakers, including in the US, to regulate the development of AI, stating that “no one thinks self-regulation is enough.”
“You need law enforcement and the politicians to get into the discussion about what safeguards and monitoring look like,” Gates remarked. “It will be a little bit of overhead for the industry, but not a dramatic slowing of what they’re doing.”
Anthropic co-founder Dario Amodei and OpenAI boss Sam Altman recently flagged AI-related risks, including “loss of human control”.
However, US President Donald Trump rejected concerns over rapid development of AI as “conspiracy”. He said the tool was “super intelligence”, not artificial intelligence
Contrary to Trump’s theory, Gates called on Americans not to ignore the risks associated with AI.
