Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Vigilance sleuths on Monday apprehended Niranjan Singh, Revenue Inspector of Keshari Nagar Circle, Unit-VI, Bhubaneswar, while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 to process and forward an enquiry report for the issuance of a legal heir certificate.
According to a Vigilance release, the complainant had applied online on September 9 for the certificate following the deaths of his mother and younger brother, submitting all required documents. He subsequently met the Revenue Inspector three or four times requesting him to forward the enquiry report to the competent authority. Despite repeated requests, Singh delayed the process without justification and insisted on a bribe of Rs 5,000 to clear the application online.
Aggrieved by the demand, the applicant approached the vigilance authorities. A team from Odisha Vigilance then trapped Singh red-handed as he accepted the bribe amount.
Following the trap, vigilance teams are conducting searches at two locations linked to Singh from the angle of disproportionate assets. A case has been registered under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018 and further investigation is underway, it added.
